Eliza Midgett
Colors evoke emotions in me, and I have a need to be surrounded by brilliant hues. Color is a part of my identity, and it brings me happiness to see people stroll into my studio and watch their eyes light up and the smiles on their faces as they are enveloped in color.
In my work, I disassemble scenes that lie before me and reassemble them into my own surreal abstracted compositions. On my canvases, organic shapes are outlined by undulating black lines which divide a multitude of saturated tropical colors. Viewing the world in chunks of color, shadows, exaggerated shapes, and patterns, I rearrange nature into my own wonderland, devoid of the grayness of the real world. By transforming my subjects in this way, I can tell the hidden stories and soothe my whimsical soul. Color, my passion, powerful and intense, is the magic tool I use to communicate artistically. Arranging intricate color relationships within my reimagined margins allows me to convey emotions onto my canvas and gives my work a sense of humor, joy, and surprise.
